Marathon, Florida Keys

Capt. Bob Brown

Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfish Perking Up

Recent cool weather here in the middle Keys has perked up the Sailfish action off Marathon. Today several charter boats caught and released more than 1 Sail. The action had been concentrated along the edge of the reef from 75-200ft. of water. I heard of one Sailfish being caught today off a boat anchored on the reef fishing for Yellowtail Snapper and hooked up a Sail off the kite. Other action was from

120-160ft range. Some nice sized "Slammer" Dolphin were also caught at this depth along with a few nice Cobia. Other reports of nice catches of Dolphin have been coming in from offshore and mostly from within 10 miles of shore.

Snappers Have Been Our Thing!

The past four trips aboard the "Sundance" turned into mainly Snapper trips due to weather and our parties wanting some good action and eating without too much "rock n roll" of the open water. The action at the 7 Mile Bridge has been fantastic for large Mangrove Snapper in the 3-6lb range and plenty of smaller "keeper" sized Mangs from 12-14". Also lots of fun sportfishing action with Jack Crevalles, Yellow Reef Jacks, and undersized Groupers. We also managed to catch and release a nice Jewfish around 15lb. (Small by Jewfish standards but large for a bridge Grouper). All this bridge fishing action is a nice alternative on days when it's a bit rough on the ocean side.

The Snapper action has been very good back in Florida Bay as well along with a nice "turn on" of the Spanish Mackerel recently.

On Monday, we did manage to do some deep wreck fishing on the Atlantic side before the 20+knot North wind chased us into calmer waters. Our angers of Paul & Duane Fredell of Colorado managed to haul in a nice 15+lb. Mutton Snapper and released a nice Amberjack around 30lb. I'm sure that "stuffed Mutton" made some fine eating that night!

Even though we have had some breezy weather lately, the fishing here in Marathon has been fantastic! Now is the time to set up a great Florida Keys adventure! Check out our web site for more info on Keys fishing and the Marathon area. Thanks!

Good luck in all of your fishing adventures,

Capt. Bob Brown, Jr.
