Marathon, Florida Keys

Capt. Bob Brown
July 5, 2002
Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Reef Bite is ON!

The summer Snapper bite has been hot lately on the reef edge on the oceanside of Marathon and the middle Keys. Nice sized Mangroves have been coming in from the shallow patch reefs and also from the deeper reef edge in 40-70ft. of water. Yellowtail Snapper have also been cooperating lately with nice catches being reported up and down the reef edge on the deeper side. A few large black Grouper have also been coming in from the reef from 40-100ft. of water. Look for the Snapper action to continue to be good especially at night.

Lots of Dolphin!

The offshore fishing has been very good for catching numbers of Dolphin lately with schoolie sized fish being the norm. A few larger "slammers" have been coming in from the 20-30 mile range offshore, but mostly the smaller fish have been showing up everywhere. Breezy and rainy conditions in June made conditions difficult at times, but some nice catches were had. Some large Blackfin Tuna have also been coming in near the humps along with a few Wahoo mostly around floating debris.

Tarpon On The Move!

Tarpon fishing in the middle Keys is reaching a transition period where fish have been moving along the islands rather than hanging at the bridges. There are still some fish showing up at the 7 mile and Bahia Honda bridges, but some good numbers of Tarpon can be found this time of year moving along the islands on the ocean side headed toward Miami usually. Look for schools of fish working up the shoreline in early mornings or late evenings for best bites, try tossing a live pinfish to them or live blue crabs. For more info on Tarpon fishing in the middle Keys, check out our website! Good luck in all of your fishing adventures!!
