Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Yellowtail Perk Up
The famous reef fishing in the Florida Keys had been taking a bit of a hit this winter with all the dirty water left over from Hurricane Wilma, but things seem to be back to normal lately with clean waters on the reef and nice sized Yellowtail Snapper biting as usual. Mark Greenbaum of Chicago area along with friends Steve and Robin had a nice catch of Yellowtail aboard the "Sundance" the other day. Some nice Flag sized fish up to 4lb were taken along with lots of smaller tails. Most fish were 16-26 inches. Not a bad reef bite. We followed that up with some trolling for Dolphin and Sails and hooked a double header of large Dolphin landing one about 22lb. The second fish, which we estimated at near 40lb decided to spit the hook out after a 35 minute fight on 20lb spinning tackle about 1 ft from the gaff...... need I say more about that one? Tough to take but part of the challenge of fishing!
Dolphin and Sails
Sailfishing off the Keys was red hot about a week to 10 days ago, but a shift in the gulfstream and NW winds slowed down the action. There have been some fish along the reef edge in 100-300ft of water being caught, mostly seen free jumping. If you are fortunate enough to have a Sail free jump near you, motor over to the area where the fish jumped as quickly as possible and throw out some live baits. If you have plenty of bait, a scoop of free livies will help.
Like I mentioned above, some larger Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi) have been hitting the docks the past few days off of Marathon and the middle Keys. This trend should continue the next few weeks and months! Let the offshore games begin.
Tarpon Time!
Tarpon action has been heating up at the 7 mile bride this week with some good catches reported. Most of the fish have been caught after dark on the outgoing tide, but the action should improve in the next couple weeks to include daytime bites and catches. Look for a hot bite by mid April all over the Keys!
Good luck in all your fishing adventures!
