Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Offshore Run & Gun

Offshore fishing in the Florida Keys this time of year can be a bit hit and miss but there is always a good possibility of running into a school of Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi) along with a nice sized fish or two. Best way to find and target Dolphin in the late summer, early fall time of year is to cover lots of area as the fish could be at any depth and any distance from shore. Because of the warm water situation caused by all the summer heating, the inshore and offshore waters can be the same temp causing there to be no defined target area to go after the offshore species. The best way is to chase diving birds and look for floating debris. The birds can be the best way to find fish, especially larger ones and may take some high speed trolling to keep up with traveling birds. I like to put out some lures that can be trolled at medium or high speeds so you can cover more ground and still have a bait out there for a fish to spot as you are folling birds or looking for debris. That kind of trolling can also trigger the occasional Wahoo or Marlin bite so best to have some tackle out there in the 30lb class in case the stray Blue comes along.

Nite Bite on the Reef

The best reef fishing this time of year can be had at night when the fish are feeding and the hot sun is not around to bake you. Lots of Keys anglers get on the water around supper time and find their favorite Snapper spot on the reef and start chumming around sun down. The fish move in and the bite turns on after dark. Moon phases can play a role in the bite as well as full moon and calm weather at night can be dynomite! Make sure your boat has plenty of battery power or a gernerator to run your lights all night and have enough power to start up and head home!
