Marathon, Florida Keys

Capt. Bob Brown

Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Big January Dolphin

The fact that the weather has been so warm and the waters around the Keys are about 6-10 degrees above normal for this time of year has had it's good and bad points. The bad is that the winter migratory fish have been a bit spotty lately. Sailfish have been around but not up to par for the past couple years. Some catches of as many as 4-6 sails have been reported in the Marathon area, but most days have been one or two fish being released. The flip side is that there have been some nice Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi) hitting the docks for this time of year and some fish have been tipping the scales at near 40lb. Some school fish have also been coming in lately. Windy conditions have kept some anglers from venturing too far offshore but most of the fish I am talking about came from the inshore area of about 100-350ft of water. The Gulfstream has been in close lately as well adding to the influx of warm water offshore fish in the area. Some nice Wahoo have also been caught out of the same area along with some Blackfin Tuna. King Mackerel are around also on the Atlantic side with one coming in on our boat the other day around 35lb. Good numbers of Kings on the reef edge lately too in 50-90ft of water around some of the good reef structure.

Bayside Boogie

The action in Florida Bay has been very good as of late on Mangrove Snapper in the inshore areas near the 7 mile bridge, and out to about 12 miles in the bay. Some good Cobia fishing has also been going on in the bay along with some nice grouper and a variety of other fun to catch fish with less table savy. Spanish Mackerel have been active along with some schools of small Bluefish, Jacks, Yellowtail, and Goliath Grouper. Bay fishing has been the choice for a lot of charters lately as the breezy conditions on the atlantic side have limited the anglers on that side and most people opting for the calmer seas. The bite has been great though and the bay has not disappointed too often. If you would like more info on fishing in the middle Florida Keys, check out our web site. Good luck in all of your fishing adventures!
