Marathon, Florida Keys

Capt. Bob Brown

Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Breezin the Bay

The breezy conditions this week have forced many captains to opt for the bayside fishing and it has not disappointed with some great catches of Snapper, Grouper, Cobia, Sharks, Jacks, Goliath Grouper, Bluefish, Pompano, Redfish, and more... Just because it is breezy does not mean you have to stay at the dock here in the Florida Keys. We have excellent fishing in the calm waters of Florida Bay! During times when the Atlantic side may have seas of 6-8ft or so, you can count on having a relaxing day catching a large variety of fish in the Bay in seas of 1 ft or sometimes less. The reason being is the shallow waters do not allow the waves to build up and there are even island and shoals to fish behind where we can fish in just about flat calm conditions. There aren't any of the blue water fish out there, such as sailfish, Dolphin, Tuna, etc. But the ones I listed above are out there and many more. If you are worried about fishing in the Keys because it might be breezy and you don't like the rough seas, then a bay trip is the solution to get your fishing fix!

Sailfish Like It Rough!

If you are a bit hardy, love blue water, and don't mind a breezy day, the reward for putting up with the seas is that it could be a banner day of Sailfishing in the Florida Keys. We are in the peak of Sailfish season here and they have been biting. The area from Marker 20 off of Key Colony Beach to Sombrero light has been consistantly good lately and should light up even more in the next few weeks with the cooler more seasonal temps that we have been getting lately. Winds are supposed to subside in the next few days and the offshore bite should be on with Sailfish, Kingfish, Dolphin, Tuna, and some Wahoo. A couple days ago the wind was down and we got offshore to find a nice weedline in 200ft of water with plenty of Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi) some up to 15lb and then spent the afternoon on the reef catching some nice sized Mangrove Snapper and Red Grouper to round out an eating fish grand Slam of Dolphin, Grouper, & Snapper. Plenty of King Mackerel were had too, and there are plenty of Kings around to round out your catch on the Atlantic side. Should be great weather and fishing for anything you want to do this week. So if you are planning a trip to south FL check out our web site for some more info on the area and fishing.

Good luck in all your fishing adventures!

Capt Bob Brown, Jr.
