Marathon, Florida Keys

Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfish Heating Up!

The winter months are the best for targeting Sailfish in the Florida Keys! Usually, the cooler northeast breezes keep the population of Sailfish in big numbers here off of Marathon and the middle Keys. This winter the temperatures have been more like spring than winter and the sailfish bite has been a bit below what we have experienced the past 10 years or so. But recent cooler weather has helped the bite improve and lots of Florida Keys anglers have had great Sailfishing stories to tell when they got in from a day of fishing here off of Marathon. The action heated up this week in the area off of Sombrero light and from 4-6 miles east and west of the light. Some multiple hook-ups have been happening with some triple headers and quadruple headers in the mix. Some other boats have caught single fish and totaled as many as 8 sails on a trip.

There have also been plenty of nice Dolphin around lately and a few Wahoo in the mix this past week. Blackfin Tuna have been finding their way into the inshore area in 150-250ft of water and there have been some big King Mackerel around as well. Offshore has produced some nice catches of Dolphin lately too and the west hump off of Marathon has been producing some Blackfin & Skipjack Tuna under the frigate birds.

Cobia still lighting up the Bay.

Bayside wreck fishing has been good for the past couple months for Cobia and some good size Goliath grouper have also been caught. Spanish Mackerel remain and excellent choice when targeting Florida Bay with some good numbers hanging out in the 10-12 mile range north of Marathon. Some Cobia hitting the docks have been up to 50lb., but most have been in the 20-30lb class. Mangrove Snapper fishing has been good when the wind blows out of the E or SE so if the wind is north you may want to target Cobia, Mackerel, grouper, etc.. Snapper fishing has been excellent lately at the 7 mile bridge west of the moser channel. If you would like more info on fishing in the Marathon and middle keys area, check out our web site!

Good luck in all your fishing adventures!
