Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfish Bustin Loose!

The past week has seen the Sailfish show up in grand fashion in the Marathon area with some boats posting double digit releases and seeing 30+ fish in a day. The days when the wind blows out of the east at about 15K or more, the sails have been rising to the surface and 'tailing' down sea. Sight fishing has been the norm for fishing those kind of conditions. Most boats have been pitching live baits to fish on the move. When calmer days prevailed the past couple days, captains were on the lookout for free jumping fish and running to the area where the fish was seen. After pitching out some free baits to help entice the fish to come up to the surface, some boats were hooking up doubles and triples of sails. This can be wild and fast action. Best areas have been from Grassy Key to Big Pine Key with some 'super hot' spots just east of Sombrero light and about 4 miles west of Sombrero light. Also, the area just offshore of Grassy key has attrated even some Islamorada charter boats this week as the hot bite continued off of Marathon.

Bigger Dolphin Movin in!

Last week saw many Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi) tipping the scales in the 25-30lb. classs. On the 'Sundance" the other day we had 5 Dolphin over 20lb and numerous school fish. The bite has been up and down but up more of the time. Things slowed a bit over this past weekend as a cold front came to town and the north wind pushed the fish further offshore. With a return to SE winds Monday and the rest of this week, the bite should be hot again. Best areas have been under floating debris and in the 600ft level and beyond.

Tarpon Tuning up

Tarpon fishing is busting loose here in Marathon and should be good for the next three months or so. This week should be the first real "hot bite" time this season as the fish are in the area and a forecast of warming temps and SE winds should put the tarpon in a feeding frenzy here at the Marathon area bridges. Bahia Honda and 7 Mile bridges should be the best target areas along with Long Key bridge. Don't forget some quality live bait if targeting tarpon. Live Mullet can be had for a price by local live bait providers if you are coming down with your own boat. Send me an email if you are looking for some live bait and I will put you in touch with the right folks! If you prefer to have an experience guide put you on the hot bite, check out our web site and give us a call for a thrill you won't soon forget!

Good luck in all your fishing adventures!
