Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tarpon Heating Up!

Tarpon season is coming into full bloom and the fishing is busting loose this week. Big Tarpon are here now and have been biting the past few days (and nights) at the famous tarpon grounds at the 7 mile bridge and Bahia Honda bridge. Some big fish up to 160lb. have been battling anglers and some large Bull Sharks and Hammerheads have moved in also. On the "Sundance" the other day we hooked a Goliath Grouper when tarpon fishing at the 7 mile bridge that we estimated at around 400lb!! So not only are the Tarpon moving in and heating up, but there are plenty of other big critters around to mix things up a bit. Some nice Mangrove Snapper have also been biting at the 7 mile bridge along with some huge Jack Crevalle and other Jacks. Look for this action to continue to be great for the next couple months as the season is just kicking into high gear. Don't miss out on some fantastic action on big game fish here in the middle Keys. We still have a few openings left for catching big trophy Tarpon in the next month so if you have always wanted to catch the 'silver king', now is the time to get on down here!

Sailfish conditions need a change...

Sailfish had been tearing it up here in Marathon last week but the weather took a turn along with the current and the bite has temporarily cooled. Once the wind turns back to the east the bite should pick back up and the sails should be pouring through the area. Meanwhile, there have been some nice Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi) coming to the docks and plenty of school sized Mahis as well. A few Wahoo are out there too and there have been several Blue Marlin hooked up this week off of Marathon. Not too many Marlin hook ups have been successful however as most boats are fishing for Dolphin and not rigged with the larger tackle needed to battle Marlin. So the fish usually saw through the leader with their bill or get wrapped up in the light line and break off. But good to know they are out there....

The Swordfish bite has been on lately too when we have had calm weather but not many boats have been out lately when the breeze has been up.

Good luck in all your fishing adventures!
