World Sailfish

Capt. Bob Brown
April 18, 2008
Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hey Sailfishermen... I am here at the world sailfish championships in Key West. Today is the off day of the three day tournament and after 2 days the fishing has been great! The first day over 230 fish were caught and released. Day 2 was not much different as somewhere around 460 fish have been released so far after 2 days. Top boats have 13 and 12 fish after 2 days with many boats in the 8-9 fish range. We are sitting on 6 fish released after 2 days fishing, but hopefully the third day tomorrow will be our hot day. The bite has been all up and down the line from Key West to Looe Key Reef and the fish have been hanging on the egde of the reef in about 100-180ft of water. Most boats have been kite fishing and using goggle eyes, pilchards, threadfin herring and blue runners for bait. Look for this action to continue for a while as the fish are migrating toward Mexico to spawn.

We have also caught some big cobia and nice King mackerel the past few days while tournament fishing for sailfish. So keep a few baits handy to pitch to the swimming cobia the next couple weeks.

Tarpon fishing has also been good the past week around the bridges in the middle Keys. The seven mile bridge has had a hot bite going on the past few days and the mornings have been better for catching fish lately. Live mullet, pinfish and blue crabs have been the best live baits and lures pitched after dark have also been working good. If you would like more info on fishing in Marathon and the middle keys, check our web site out! Good luck in all your fishing adventures!
