Tarpon Bite HOT!

Capt. Bob Brown
May 4, 2008
Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Tarpon have moved into the middle Keys in good numbers and nice sized fish are abundant at all middle Keys locations. The 7 mile bridge where I fish most of the time has been great in the mornings on the incoming tide lately with the big Tarpon biting on a variety of baits including live Mullet, Pinfish, Blue Crabs, and artificial lures. The best lures have been Bomber Long A's and are best used when fished in the dark. The best live bait has been Mullet at the 7 mile bridge and blue crabs at Bahia Honda bridge. Look for Tarpon action to stay hot through June in the middle Florida Keys.

Offshore fishing has been decent for schoolie Dolphin but the big slammers have been few and far inbetween this week. There have been pleny of smaller fish offshore around debris in the 600-800ft range. If you are lucky enough to find something large floating like a log, or board, then you want to have a few live baits in the live well to catch the nicer fish. Look for Wahoo at times under debris also. Try flipping a butterfly jig under the debris when pitching live baits to Mahis as the Wahoo might be deeper and the butterly jig will find them!

Reef and wreck fishing has been great all week with Yellowtail biting good on the reef and large Permit showing up on the oceanside wrecks along with some big Amberjack and Barracuda. Nice Mutton Snapper and Black Grouper can also be had lately by dropping live baits on the deep reef or on wrecks. Permit action should continue to be good on deep wrecks for the rest of this month.
