Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Right Place, Right Time
If you aren’t sure if you are at the right place at the right time, just take a peak at the weather channel. The weather map is all white and blue. The only contrast is Florida. The weather was perfect this week. The fish have been biting and our country has a president. If you think that we are busy now, wait until the migration of people get here after Christmas. I wouldn’t want to stay in the land of blue and white either.
Fishing was consistent this week. There are plenty of shiners around. It doesn’t hurt to take a few shrimp along so you can catch a few of the many sheepshead that we have been getting. Don’t be surprised if you pick up a black drum or any other species that comes along. We had low winter tides this week so most of us were dropping shrimp in the ditches and holes that were still holding water. Snook, redfish and snapper were our reward.
There have been plenty of pompano in the passes of Marco and the Ten Thousand Islands. It is not unusual to catch ladyfish and mackerel while fishing for pompano. I have been getting some large trout as well. Most of the fish have been caught on jigs.
Anglers have been catching a boatload of trout, bluefish, mackerel and ladyfish on live shiners and jigs on the grassflats off of Cape Romano and beyond. You know that you can get into non-stop action if you spot birds working. They are usually over a school of mackerel and bluefish.
Shiners and shrimp have been taking a few snook and redfish in the middle islands and back bays. We are starting to see more redfish and snook in the shallow water. Guides have been doing well with their clients sight fishing with flies and light jigs. The water has been very clear so there has been no problem seeing the fish.
With such a variety of fish here right now, it is hard to imagine not being able to go out and have a great time with family and friends. It sure beats living in the land of blue. I’ll see you on the water.
