Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Warming Trend
It looks as if we are going to have a warming trend this week. Temperatures will climb to the seventies and may even reach the eighties during the next week. If there is a period of warming for a week or so, it will make a tremendous difference in the water temperature. That is great news.
Last week the sun came out and the air temperature warmed to almost eighty degrees. We hammered the trout, ladyfish, and jacks on the incoming tide. Rootbeer colored jigs were the ticket. I think that any jig would have worked. The fish were out of control. They were probably happy to have a semblance of warmth. I think we can look forward to similar action for the next week. Fish are becoming more active in the shallower water. We caught sheepshead and a few small snook in three to five feet of water along the mangrove shorelines in the Caxambas area. Passes and deeper runs in the islands should produce good action for trout. Don’t rule out a redfish or snook. As the water temperature warms, there may be increasing shots at snook. Jigs or live shrimp will serve you well. You can still fish in the deeper parts of the backcountry rivers and pick up sheepshead, black drum or even a grouper.
Shallow water sight fishing is bound to get better. Anglers can pole up on redfish and snook and throw a light jig, live shrimp or fly to their quarry. This is one of the most challenging forms of fishing that we have to offer. It is a true test of skill.
We are rounding the corner of winter. It isn’t safe to put the warm clothes away just yet. But with the next weeks’ forecast looking so good, I would get out on the grassflats or go to your favorite trout runs and get to it. We can get another cold blast so now is the time to take advantage of this warming period. I know the fish are feeding well don’t miss it. I’ll see you on the water
