Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Round The Bend
It seems that the warming trend is going to continue for at least the next week. Temperatures are supposed to stay in the mid seventies. The water temperature went past the sixty-degree mark this past week and despite some breezy days, fishing was much more pleasant. I actually took the winter garb off this week. That is good news. Guides have taken a real financial beating these past two months.
Trout action is starting to heat up a bit. Most of the grass flats have been getting blown out. If you can get out in the morning, you might be able to score over the grass flats of Cape Romano. Grass patches have been productive out in front of the islands. I have been scoring well in the deeper troughs along the islands. Most of the fish are being taken on jigs. I don’t expect the action to change this week. We are going to get a cold front this weekend. Let’s hope that it doesn’t stall over Florida like such fronts are famous for doing so. A stalled front can create lingering heavy breezes.
We are starting to see more redfish with occasional snook in the shallow water. Flyfishermen have been hitting paydirt with more frequency. Don’t discount throwing a light jig to shallow water fish. It is not uncommon to take a large trout or feisty jack in a shallow water ditch.
Sheepshead and black drum have been taking shrimp bounced on the bottom in the deeper runs around Caxambas. River fishing in the islands has been producing as well. Small grouper are a welcome surprise and we have taken a few legal redfish with this method too.
February can throw a winter curve ball. I think that we have come around the bend of winter. We have seen some very warm February weather in the past so let’s hope that we get a break. Next week should keep us busy, as there should be plenty of sunshine. That’s a new concept. I hope that your line comes tight and I’ll see you on the water.
