Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fly A Kite
Most of us don’t even ask about the forecast anymore. We know that it is going to be windy. There has been rain involved just about every other day too. Regardless of the wind, the fishing in the last week has been fair to excellent. The fish still seem like there is a hint of winter still in the air. The water temperature has been fluctuating up and down all week.
I finished out the week tarpon fishing with my dad and Jim Cross. We hooked and landed several more large tarpon. Spinner sharks kept us busy in between tarpon strikes. The spinner shark can make blinding runs. They will then explode out of the water and spin like a football thrown by Dan Marino. Then end result is usually a frayed line.
Bait is still in the area. Snook, redfish, and trout have been sporadic. There seems to be two scenarios. One scenario is being at the right place at the right time. Some of the guides will do well, while another guide will only do fair at best. The other scenario is the fish seem to be turning on real well and everybody does well. Jigs, lures, and flies have been holding their own, but it seems that the highly skilled in these methods are the ones producing.
We are feeling the brunt of another front with heavy winds as I type. My wife has wind chimes right outside of my window and they just won’t shut up. They are supposed to be pleasant but the chimes only remind me of the powerful force that I have no control over. I feel that there will be more wind into the weekend. There just doesn’t seem to be any end to it in the near future. Even the air is cooler in the morning. The next week’s forecast appears to be more of the same. Most of us are well seasoned to fishing in the wind. It hasn’t quit since February.
Being ever optimistic, a person can still go out and have a productive day. I always go back to basics under adversity and it has always served me well. Fish what you know and you will almost always produce. I say that for the working person because many of you hinge your whole week on getting out on the water. Don’t squander those hard earned days when the weather is unstable by running helter skelter. Load your boat for bear. Jigs, spoons, lures and flies are a must. You never know when the bait scene will blow away. If all else fails, bring a kite. The weather is perfect for it. I’ll see you on the water.
