Report for Naples, Marco Island and the Ten Thousand Islands

Capt. Matt Hoover
May 29, 2001
Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

High Pressure

The front that passed through gave us a little peace and quiet. Then it did what a lot of fronts do when they come to Florida. It backed up over the lower portion of the peninsula and stalled. That left us with a mixture of gloomy, uncertain weather. Winds out of the south, southwest can give us the fits. Still, most guides were able to have a few productive days.

The tarpon thinned out again after the weekend and most of the folks that I talked to concentrated on snook, redfish, and trout. There was some live bait around but it was tough to acquire. Those that went to the beach were well advised to wax their boats and hang ten. Some keeper size snook were hitting the docks and I saw a few redfish too. Most of the fish that I saw were caught on live bait. Jigs and plugs in the right hands caught fish too. There were a few tarpon caught over the week by people that were targeting them specifically and willing to go for broke.

The weather map shows a large clear space, which means that we will be blessed with a large high-pressure cell. Let’s hope that this front will loose its grip on us. I think that we will enjoy some great fishing in the next week. The wind should come out of the eats and the beaches will clear up. It is time for the larger snook to come in the passes and I would expect the snook to start showing up on our beaches where we can get after them by sight using bait, jigs, and flies. The redfish are still a little spotty but anglers are catching them with more frequency. Some guides have actually found small schools under bushes and have been able to take more than one at a time. Trout will remain a mainstay and don’t rule out tarpon. The days will become long and hot and tarpon will show in the early morning hours ready for action. Plugs, live bait, and flies will do the trick. It’s going to be a great week. I hope to see you out there.
