Report for Naples, Marco Island and the Ten Thousand Islands

Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Summer Steam

I am sorry that I missed you last week. I had to go out of state for shoulder surgery. It is lucky for me that the surgeon likes to fish. It also makes it real interesting trying to type. It was a beautiful week for fishing. The weather was hot and balmy. The mornings were still. Those are perfect ingredients for a great day on the water.

Backcountry guide Stacy Mullendore called me to see how I was. He said that there is plenty of live bait. He caught plenty of snook in the Caxambas and upper Ten Thousand Islands areas. I had similar reports from other guides as well. There are snook everywhere. Folks are fishing the outside points on the outside islands on the incoming tide. They are still catching plenty of fish in the back bays too. After surgery, my dad and I took a gentle boat ride to the beach. There were snook of all sizes roaming around. It pained me even more to know that I couldn’t pick up my flyrod and go after them. A white jig would have done the job but the doctor said no. Lots of medium size snook are being caught on baitfish streamers with the flyrod. And a couple of good friends of mine have been doing very well with Hybrid rubber bodied jigs. It seems as if everyone is happy. Most of these guys are catching a few keeper size redfish on each outing too.

The trout have been thick over the grass patches of Cape Romano. Don’t forget to fish in front of the islands. They have been taking live bait and jigs. I think that you could have a blast with them over the grass flats with small top water lures. Ladyfish of all sizes will keep you entertained.

There are still some large tarpon around. Friends Donny Kish and Trevis Mcelvey jumped several on light rods early in the morning. The fish were tailing, rolling and laying up in quiet bays as the sun came up. They later landed four that went over one hundred pounds by using cut bait. Guide Duane White just called me and said that his anglers jumped two this morning. They caught a forty-inch snook on cut bait while waiting for a tarpon strike.

It looks as if we might get the tail end of the front that is passing through to our north. That will create a little wind but I don’t think that we will see any rain. The next week looks as if it will be a bit cloudy and breezy at times. It has been hot this week so I don’t think anglers will mind. In the meantime, I will sit here and recover. I will still have my finger on the pulse of things because I have all my spies out there. I will miss seeing you on the water.
