Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Weak Tides, Blistering Heat
Weak tides and hot weather slowed the fishing a little tougher this week. I heard that from more than one guide this week. There is bait around and it certainly helps to have it when you are dealing with slow tides. Still, plenty of fish were around to keep one entertained.
Guides reported that they were catching fair numbers of small snook on live bait. I think that the larger fish a bit lazier during the neap tides. I also heard that they were hitting the fly as too. Redfish are still spotty. Anglers are catching a few but it seems as if you have to be at the right place at the right time.
Quite a few anglers are targeting trout right now so that they can take something home to the table. Snook season is closed and the redfish are scarce. Captains have been getting them off of Cape Romano, Pompano Lump, and out in front of the islands. I like to catch the trout where I catch snook. Those trout are usually larger and it is a benefit that comes from fishing a lot. Anglers are catching trout on live bait, jigs, and shrimp.
Folks are still hooking tarpon of various sizes. Most of that action takes place early in the morning in that major passes and quite bays of the ten thousand islands. You will see fish in the passes around Marco as well.
It doesn’t appear that there will be any significant weather changes in the next week. We are starting to get the afternoon showers that announce summertime to southwest Florida. That is a good thing. We need some fresh water to flush out the backcountry. My lawn and water bill needs a break too.
Get out early to avoid the heat. Fishing should remain good for the next week. It will get even better as the tide speeds up. In the meantime, I’m still grounded. It’s tough sitting on the sidelines. It makes it harder to do this report. But I’ll be on the water soon.
