Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Consistency
This past week proved once again that summer is upon us. Most of the guides and anglers that I talked to are fishing half to three quarter day trips. The summer rains are showing up like clockwork. The weather has been perfect all week. I don’t see anything unusual forecasted for the next week. We will be approaching a full moon and that will speed up the tides. Most of us like the water moving at a moderate rate. It helps make fish a little more careless.
Guides told me that if you had a well full of bait, you could get into some serious catches of snook. Most of the fish were small to medium sized. But each catch had a few larger fish mixed in. That’s fine fishing as far as I am concerned. Captain Mike Hebert reported that a client of his subdued a twenty five-pound snook on light tackle this week. Those larger fish are out cruising around right now because they are still spawning. The redfish still seem to remain spotty. You may get one or two on an outing but we are still waiting for them to show in better numbers.
Resident tarpon are still showing in the passes during the early morning hours and then later in the afternoon. They can be taken in many different ways. Most of the guys that are catching them right now are using some form of cutbait. Just get in a likely spot, throw out your offering and sit back and wait.
Trout are still providing many anglers with action. A lot of people are trout fishing for the table. Cape Romano and the surrounding grassflats are providing plenty of action. Grass patches in front of the islands are covered up with anglers right now. Jigs, live bait and shrimp are doing the trick.
With summer upon us, we can rely on some consistency. Just get your fishing done early. The rains have been coming around two to three o’clock in the afternoon. Next week should provide similar action. I would expect it to get even better with the tide perking up. I remain landlocked and bound for the loony bin soon. I hope to get out there with you soon.
