Report for Naples, Marco Island and the Ten Thousand Islands

Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Just Right

Cool mornings and warm afternoons stayed with us this past week. We had no surprise weather and fishing was good. It seems as if the fall migration is in limbo. That’s just fine as far as fishermen are concerned. It is a time when all manners of species of fish co exist.

Anglers are catching large ladyfish, bluefish and large mackerel in the passes of Marco and The Ten Thousand islands. There are schools of these fish close to shore as well. Just look for the birds. Jigs have been working well. Live bait will do the trick as too. Just position your boat upwind of the school and let the wind drift you over the fish.

Live bait is still abundant. We are catching fair numbers of small to medium sized snook around the Marco area. We have been catching some legal redfish on most of my trips this week too. I have been using live bait, but many of my friends are doing very well with jigs. We are starting to catch more trout in snook spots. Soon it will be time to start fishing for them. We have been catching sheepshead around the islands. It is a good indicator that winter is closing in on us.

I had been seeing tarpon throughout the week. My brother Drew and I decided that they needed some company. We anchored up in one of the passes in the Ten Thousand Islands early in the morning. We set up four rods with cut bait and sat back with a good cigar. About ten minutes passed when one of the reels stared clicking off. I picked it up and set the hook. Seventy pounds of silver broke the calm water like glass and the fight was on. This fish put on an unusual display of acrobatics. I think that tarpon have a little more juice when the water is cooler. It wasn’t long before we had a good, clean release. We hooked and jumped two more fish that morning. We finished the day by catching a few snook. I will add that there are some jacks out there that can eat New Jersey. They can hurt you on a ten-pound test outfit.

There is a front looming over Texas at the time of this writing. I am out of the prediction business. Let’s hope that it slides to the north of us by the time it gets here. In the meantime, the weather has been ideal and there is no reason why you can’t get some great action. Hurry up. I’ll see you on the water.
