Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hancuffed
Winter decided to get a grip on us and give us one more shake. Back to back cold fronts have plagued fishermen for the last week and it looks as if the cool air will remain throughout the remainder of the week.
Most of us took a hit financially this week. It was touch and go at best. There were some days when we cancelled trips and stayed at home. We have lost at least ten degrees in water temperature. The cold and wind grounded me today. The air temperature is forty-six and the wind is gusting to twenty out of the northeast. There were days when we could get out, but the wind was howling. Many of us went to deep water with jigs or shrimp. Tactics like this produced trout, snapper, jacks and a variety of other species. There is no way to sugar coat it fishing has been tough. This was one of those weeks that you had to be dedicated.
For example, friends and anglers Donny Kish and Trevis Mcelvey beat the bushes with jigs for eight hours and managed to produce a couple of snook and two redfish. Those fish were lost. These guys leave no stone unturned. That’s a lot of work. It’s time like this that you want to go deep. Search out holes in rivers and creeks. Some places hold springs where the water temperature is warmer. You can score big on many species as they huddle in the comfort of warmer water. Jigs tipped with shrimp or live shrimp under a split shot will bring a strike.
I wish there was more to report but it has been slim pickings. Folks are huddled around fishing magazines in warm houses waiting for the thaw. Get in deep water or back in the creeks. Stay warm and I’ll see you on the water.
