Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Chamber Of Commerce
This past week is the reason why hard core anglers tough out the winter months. You have to put in many days on the water to finally experience the chamber of commerce days. All of the glamour fish are out of hiding. They are looking for a fight. Judging by the many reports that I have received, that request was met. Large snook and tarpon took top honors. There were some good redfish stories too.
It seems as if tarpon are taking the top billing. Anglers of all degrees of skill level have been getting hookups. If you have been fishing in the Ten Thousand Islands, you couldn’t go a day without seeing a tarpon busting bait or free jumping. Some anglers have been assaulted by tarpon while they have been fishing for snook. I have had anglers catch at least one or more tarpon from fifty to one hundred and thirty pounds each day of the week. Anglers and guides alike had numerous hook ups if they were pursuing tarpon. Cutbait, live bait, jigs, plugs and flies have been getting equal attention. Blaise Wick finally got a tarpon over fifty pounds on the fly with Captain Stacy Mullendore this week. Blaise has been hard at it and the work paid off. Congratulations go to Blaise.
Some very large snook are being caught on live threadfin herring. These are big baits. You know what they say about that. I had many reports of snook over forty inches this week. Double-digit snook days are possible right now. Don’t pass up artificial baits either. Folks are doing very well with plugs and soft baits too.
Redfish have been showing up this past week. Some of them have been very large. Guides have been releasing redfish that are over thirty inches. Once again, live bait has been a major producer. Maybe we will have a better season with the reds this year.
Magnum sized trout are being caught everywhere. These are fish that go over twenty inches. Most of the larger trout are incidental catches while folks have been fishing for snook and reds.
Large jacks and mackerel are running in packs together. There are large schools of threadfin herring not too far off the islands. The packs of fish are slashing through the schools of bait. These are good family fish. Get the kids hook on fishing while it is easy.
The mornings have been still and warm. It is a perfect combination for a slam dunk day. Put aside what you are doing and get in on the action. I’ll see you on the water.
