Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Summer Winds Down
Winds out of the east were stiff this past week. It was somewhat refreshing. However, stronger winds can pose a different kind of a challenge when it comes to catching fish. Bait is still pouring into the Marco and Ten Thousand Islands areas. On the better phases of the tides, there were enough snook to keep even the novice angler happy.
Fishing has remained consistent these past few weeks. There was a bit of a breeze to contend with. It was welcome, as it was not too strong to effect the fishing. Some of the wind blown points during the weaker phases of the tides paid off. Bait is all over the place so that is what most anglers are using to fish with. Snook of all sizes have been accommodating patient anglers. Fast moving water on points has been a good producer. I have been doing just as well by working banks slowly with the trolling motor. Many of us are starting to do well in the islands as well as south Marco. We caught snook that ranged from eighteen to thirty five inches this past week.
Most of us are catching a few redfish on each outing as well. I have been averaging four to six redfish on a full day. Those numbers are not exactly burning down the house but they are a great improvement from the recent past. Redfish have been eighteen to thirty inches in size.
Baby tarpon are still around in numbers. They have completed a few slams this week. There are a few big tarpon showing themselves so stay prepared. We have been catching larger trout while snook fishing so it is not unreasonable to wind up with a grand slam to make your day.
Jacks and ladyfish of all sizes have been filling in the gaps. I still think that jacks are one of the best fish out there. They are willing and they fight as strong as any fish for their size.
You can feel a small change in the morning. The air seems to be a little cooler; September is just around the corner. It is one of my favorite times of the year to be on the water.
Afternoon storms are packing electric with regularity right now. We have had to dodge storms all week. Several times, we had to run for home. Play it safe. I’ll see you on the water.
