Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

September Slam
Two weeks ago we spent our mornings observing and catching tarpon of all sizes along the beaches of Naples. The clouds of bait have been so thick that you can’t see the bottom in three feet of water. These bait masses are comprised of glass minnows, Spanish sardines, scaled sardines and threadfin herring. The tarpon have been slashing through them like a pack of jacks. Snook and redfish have been a no brainer most of the time as well. We had several slams throughout the month.
I spent the next ten days with my father, brother, and our two wives at the Rio Colorado Lodge in Costa Rica fishing for……….tarpon. The trip was awesome. We put 117 tarpon of all sizes in the air. Close to forty of them were brought to the boat. Take a look at the photo gallery that I put together. I highly recommend this trip to those who are stressed out. http://www.pbase.com/pirate55/costa_rica.
When I got home, it wasn’t hard to get into the swing of things. This is the time of year when anyone can find bait and catch fish. There is bait boiling at every turn from Marco to Lostman’s River. Snook and redfish are hanging out at points and fallen structure. The redfish are starting to stage in the small hard bottom passes of the Ten Thousand Islands.
Flies, plugs and jigs have been very effective as well.
There are still a great number of tarpon around. It isn’t that hard for an angler to get a slam right now. Fishing is red hot.
Season is just around the corner. That means that the cooler months aren’t that far behind. Get some while you can. I’ll see you on the water.
