Report for Naples, Marco Island and the Ten Thousand Islands

Capt. Matt Hoover
April 9, 2004
Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Like A lion

Yes I know that it has been a long time since my last report. I have to admit that March was a bit depressing. Winds bowled us all of over on a daily basis. Most guides were grumpy and kept asking, “

When is it going to end?”

Well, let’s skip that part. March came and went like a lion with a bad toothache. The beginning of April has been sketchy as well. We have been able to get bait by the grace of God this past week in the Ten thousand Islands. Just this past week the winds have settled down and we have been chasing tarpon and permit as well. I had one day where we caught two tarpon over one hundred pounds and five permit. Those fish went from twenty two to thirty pounds. Yesterday, a young man caught a permit that bottomed out my Boga Grip with a slam. I would suspect that the fish weighed at least forty pounds.

The tarpon are starting to trickle into the islands. We have been getting a few on cut bait, lures and flies. They are laying up in quiet coves and bays. Well presented flies will do the trick.

Snook and redfish have been running hot and cold. Just two days ago, the water temperature was barely 70 degrees. That is cool for this time of the year. But hey, the earth keeps tilting and the jet stream must by all physical laws get the hell back to Canada.

Most of our success has been hit and run. Points and downed bushes have been yielding snook and an occasional redfish. I have not been getting large numbers on snook, but the quality has been excellent. It has not been uncommon to catch a few fish over thirty inches.

Bush beating is bound to get better. The winds have quieted down for now. It is a pleasure to fish where you want instead of where you have to. The bait is started to come back into the islands. I think that things are going to heat up in the next week. I’ll see you on the water.
