Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Big Chill
Up until the latest cold front, fishing was superb. Bait was still plentiful and the fish were willing. Tides were perfect for those who were into the fly or just plain sight fishing game.
Small to slot snook were just about anywhere that was fishy looking that you cared to go. We were catching snook in the front back and middle grounds of the Ten Thousand Islands and south Marco areas. There were plenty of rat reds to be had as well as a few slot reds in the mix. Jacks, ladyfish, snapper, and trout were a welcome side catch.
The first cold front came and the water temperatures started to slide. Still we caught bait and got in on the last hurrah. By the end of my charter yesterday, the water temperature had dropped to sixty three degrees. Ouch. I cancelled my trip today and I am now sitting here getting ready for a big Thanksgiving dinner.
This kind of cold spell is a bit premature for this time of year. The three weather systems that came together remind me of “The Perfect Storm”. The good news is that the weather will climb back to the near eighties by the weekend. It takes awhile for the water temperature to recover, but recover it will. Until then, Happy Thanksgiving and I will see you on the water.
