Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Steady Action
This past week the sun popped out and the fishing perked up in a big way. By the end of the week, afternoon water temperatures reached seventy degrees.
I had my clients throwing shrimp with a split shot in the deeper runs of Marco and the Ten Thousand Islands. The sheepshead action was excellent. As the week progressed we started picking up a few snook. It was a sure bet that we would catch a few redfish and black drum as well. Jacks, snapper and ladyfish kept the action steady through out the day.
The trout have moved into the islands in a big way this week too. We were catching them non stop along the deeper runs of the islands using jigs. We were also catching larger trout in the shallows where you might expect to catch snook.
Snook and redfish could be found in the skinny when I took clients sight fishing with the fly rod this week. The snook were mostly lying in the very shallow darker areas of coves and flats. It was odd as they were letting us get fairly close and make multiple casts without spooking. I thought for sure they would have lock jaw with this behavior, but most of them would smash the fly when it was placed right. Redfish were on the prowl as well but my anglers couldn’t keep the hook in them.
This week was a welcome sight after the bitter cold front of last week. Let’s hope the weather will hold a while longer. I’ll see you on the water.
