Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Mixed Bag
This past week proved to be interesting. The Marco and Ten Thousand Island areas are teetering on the brink of seasonal change. Although the cooler season has been mild overall, there have still been enough water temperature fluctuations to keep us guessing.
Just as we started getting prepared for a winter pattern, the water would warm up and the snook and redfish showed up. In the beginning of the week, I was catching live bait and we were catching snook and redfish. Larger trout were attacking bait where snook should be as well. I had two days where I found medium to very large tarpon busting mullet. It was exciting to hook a few on light spinning gear. I can’t say we were totally prepared for them but had fun anyway.
The next few days, the action slowed down so we deep dropped with cut shrimp for sheepshead and what ever the hell else would bite. We caught plenty of sheepies, trout and a few redfish and black drum.
I started fishing the passes as well. The ladyfish and pompano were of the charts. We left the pompano biting yesterday because we had to go in and we had our limit in no time. I can’t remember when the pomp bite was that good. I have the next two days off for Christmas…..yes CHRISTMAS! There I said it. No offense to anyone who doesn’t celebrate Christmas, but I do. Normally I work then but I think that it is high time to take it easy with my family during this special time for the first time in fifteen years.
We have a big front coming in this weekend so fishing will be tough anyway. The overall picture has been good and I think that it will remain that way for know. I wish you all a safe and happy holidays. I’ll see you on the water.
