Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing the aftermath of the worst cold spell in my 34 years here has not been as bad as I expected. It will take some time to determine how bad the snook kill really was. I have been seeing pods of snook and there are lots of them under the lights here where I live in Naples. I know that the kill was vast and there were unscrupulous characters taking advantage of the situation. As Roan said, shame on you, What goes around comes around sooner or later.
Having said all that, most of us are doing quite well with sheepshead and black drum by bottom fishing around the deeper spots in Marco and the Ten Thousand Islands. Cut shrimp and a plits shot on the bottom in current will do the trick. Ladyfish, jacks, and a few trout have been biting as well using this method.
Trout fishing has been fair to excellent as well. I have been using quarter ounce jigs and screwtail or Hybrid bodies. Grass flats and the deeper side of the islands have been producing some excellent catches. There are a few redfish out there too. I have not had any flyfishing trips lately but would love a chance to warm up the other boat Pinocchio to get real skinny.
Regardless of the negative reports, there are still a lot of fish out there and we really have been enjoying some great winter action. I'll see you on the water.
