7 January 2018 It was COLD!

Matlacha - Saltwater Fishing Report

7 January 2018
It was COLD!
Thank God this cold spell is almost over. Had clients adamant about going out in the cold with air temps in the low 50's and I couldn't talk them out of it. Totally changed my fishing tactics and species. Sheepshead and snapper have been the go to this last week with water temps as low as 52 in Matlacha pass. Had some nice snook when I found water that was warmer mostly around creeks. When fishing for sheepshead I will free line a small piece of shrimp on a 1 j hook with a small split shot a couple inches up. Others use small jig heads but to each their own preference. But I start with using a whole shrimp to target snapper and if it gets torn up I leave that little bit on the hook and the sheepshead will take it. I've seen photos of other guys catching small reds on lures but that isn't my style. I'm not even targeting them unless they're upper slots and still will release them. Water is clearing up and supposedly the cold water below 60 kills the red tide in the area according to the news. I'll wait to see that. Good news is with all this clean cold water offshore/nearshore fishing should be going strong when it calms down.

If you're ready to go fishing give me a call to plan your trip so we can try and catch the tides right. If you're a Veteran with proof I have the best prices around and I guarantee it. I'm also on Facebook at Jimbo's Charters where I post pictures if my clients let me and my website www.Jimboscharters.com and my You tube channel I am slowly building https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGhDg-V7oR-ex6W-5ztwLAQ
Also, if you see me out there say Hi. I am a friendly guy that likes to help. Just don't ask for a pin point location, but I will tell you what I am catching fish on.
