26 October 2018 Reds and Snook on fire!

Matlacha - Saltwater Fishing Report

26 October 2018
Reds and Snook on fire!

October is here cooler temps on the way and November should be fantastic!
With the recently clean water Reds have been on fire on the flats on the incoming and outgoing tides. Ensure to hit the mangroves on Hi tides. All baits have been working, mullet, ladyfish, live pins cut pins and white bait. I've seen the Tarpon in the harbor hitting the bait schools although I haven't been targeting them.
Trout are also on fire on the grass flats with moving water. Big mangrove snapper on the oyster bars and docks.
Snook on docks all around the area I've been using white bait and when the bite slows I will chum a bit and get them fired back up.
Last night's news showed moderate levels of red tide around Boca grand and with onshore winds for the next two days who knows what's going to happen.
My last couple weeks of guiding we've caught well over our limits in all species and all my clients so far have agreed to release all fish for a photo and release instead.
Tips:
With clearer water you should be making further casts than normal so you don't spook the fish who can see better also. I also use 15-20# fluorocarbon leader in clearer water unless I am being broke off. I also make sure my hooks are correct for the size bait I am using so anywhere from a 1/0 -3/0 Owner mutu-light-wire hooks.
Good luck and tightlines!
