Afternoon Delight

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
March 17, 2008
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

That really is the only way to explain the fishing we have been experiencing lately. The time change signals one of my favorite times of the year in Miami. It's time to start fishing the late afternoon bite. And the bite has been good. To say that we left them biting would be an understatement. Let me give you 2 examples of what I'm talking about.
After catching bait we prepared for an afternoon of sailfish and late night sword fishing. We started just north of Fowey Light and in a short span of 3 1/2 hours we managed to catch 2 sailfish, a blackfin tuna, and a wahoo. Just 2 days later fishing the same general area we had a chance at 4 sails finally catching one, a kingfish and we missed a blackfin tuna that wrapped us up in the sea anchor.

That kind of leads us into my species report. It seems that the kings are starting to move into the area. I'm stating to hear about and catch more kings so look for that to continue to improve. The sailfish bite has been great due to the presence of north current in on the reef. We have been getting multiple shots at these fish as the day progresses so if you ever wanted to catch these beautiful fish now is the time of year.

The blackfin tuna have also turned on and we have already encountered some. These fish are notorious for their early morning or late afternoon bite they are hard fighters that don't know the word quit. And as if that were not enough they taste great on the grill.

Dolphins also continue to be consistent all we need is the right wind and we are catching several of these tasty and beautiful fish. These fish have all been keepers. We did one tarpon trip this week and had 2 fish in the 80-100# range jumping and pulling drag before they both earned their freedom. I have several more tarpon trips scheduled so stay tuned for a more thorough report on them.

The fishing in Miami right now is about as good as it gets it seems that all the species are starting to show up as is normal for this time of year. Keep in mind that you don't have to get up early to go fishing. Beat the heat and the crowds and let's do some late afternoon fishing. Many times you will be the only boat for miles. You can also go after work or if you want to do a split charter, sails in the afternoon and tarpon at night give me a call. We have a lot of options available and did I mention that you don't even have to wake up early.

Best of Luck…
Capt Gil Gutierrez
