Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Man has the time flown by! It's been awhile since my last fishing report but I do have a good excuse, I've been fishing! The fishing as of late has gotten very good. Let's get to some of the action.
The sailfish have finally shown up in a more consistent fashion. We have been getting multiple shots at them and have had some triple headers on at times. Apparently the fish have been eating very well because these fish have been a little larger than usual. We have been catching them on kites, flat lines and mid-depth rods. The bite has been very consistent due to a ripping north current.
The tarpon bite has also been very good. We have been averaging anywhere from 2-4 fish caught per trip. The fish are starting to also increase in size. We have had several fish over the 100# mark with the average fish of about 80#'s.
As in any part of fishing it can't always be good news. The Mahi have been hit or miss. One day you catch a couple and the next you never see one. We have caught some on the edge while kite fishing but the fish have been on the small size. As we get closer to the summer they should become more consistent in size and number. It will get better just be patient.
If you want eating fish now is the time of year to get fishing. The bottom bite has been great. The real stars of the show have been mutton snappers. We have been catching several of these tasty fish on every trip. Our largest mutton weighed in at 18#'s. We also have caught several fish in the 8-12 pound class. As of May 1st the grouper season will reopen and we will be allowed to keep some for the dinner table. If you wanted to do a bottom fishing trip and try to catch some of these tasty eating fish this is the time of year. In addition to the muttons the kingfish have kept things interesting with several fish in the 20#class and some in the high 30's. As with all of my charters any fish that you want to keep, within size and regulation limit, are yours to keep. They will be filleted and bagged for you.
This is the time of year where almost all of my trips are run in the late afternoon. We don't even start fishing until 12:00pm. Hey, sleep in and still get in on some good fishing! Some of the advantages to starting late is the fact that often times after 3:00 we are the only ones out there. The fish are still biting while everyone is leaving! This is also the time of year when the blackfin tuna show up. These are some hard fighting great tasting fish. The only downside is that they like lowlight conditions. This means we fish until about 8:00pm. We had a good success last year targeting these fish and I think this year should be no different.
Well that about covers it for now. I hope to fish with you soon, so till next time.
Best of Luck…
