April Was Great

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
May 6, 2009
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

April was a great month to be on the water. I had a very busy April and the fish did their part by cooperating and finding our baits. At one point I had fished 14 days straight in April so I apologize for being late with my report. Instead of giving you a day by day account I will give you a general overview of what has been going on.

The sail fishing has been outstanding to say the least. It seems that the sailfish are biting better now then they did in the winter time period. We had sails on every charter we did except one. The sailfish bite has been turned on by blue water and north current. I had 2 days in particular where we put out the first bait of the day and before we could put out the second bait we had a sail on. Look for the sailfish bite to continue to be strong.

The kingfish are also here in good numbers. We caught several decent sized fish this month. These fish were mixed in the same water as the sails. So you just never knew when that big king would beat the sailfish to your bait. The kings should be here for a while filing in the time between sailfish bites.

We have also been catching mahi-mahi while fishing for sails. The mahi have ranged from small bacon strips to large mahi as the one caught by my friend and fellow captain Dave Kostyo that weighed 48 pounds. Great catch Dave! All my charters managed to take home some fresh mahi for the grill. The mahi should be here for a while so now is the time if you love catching mahi.

Tarpon continue to bite well on the beaches, bay and inlets. Of all the tarpon trips I did we had one trip where we struggled to get a bite but I took some comfort in the knowledge that there were 4 other guides in the immediate area that also did not get a bite. I guess that is the way it goes sometimes. But that being said we caught fish on all the other trips. The fish weighed from 60#'s all way into the 120# class on 20 pound tackle. The tarpon should be here for just a couple of more months before they taper off and show up again sometime in December or January.

As you can see the bite is very good right now. May should continue right along the same line with a mixed bag of fish. Now is one of the best times to try and catch that Gulf Coast Slam. With sails and mahi offshore and tarpon inshore it's definitely doable. Give me a call and let's go fishing.

Till Next Time
Best of Luck…
