Down Time Is Busy Time

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
September 14, 2009
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Let me start off by apologizing for my late report. I took advantage of the down time in the charter boat industry to go on those family vacations and move the boat to a new facility. I recently moved to the TNT Marine Center. Not to worry this state of the art marina is located directly behind my old marina so you won't have far to go. My in water slip is located at the front of the marina with plenty of parking for your convenience.

Now let's talk about the fishing. I have been catching what is considered normal for this time of year. The kingfish have been around in decent numbers with some decent fish mixed in with some smaller fish. In addition to kingfish I have been also catching our fair share of false albacores. The albies have been putting on a great show by smashing our live chum and bending several rods at the same time.

The swordfish bite seems to be improving from what I have been told by several captains but I myself have not been sword fishing. They seem to be catching them in the daytime as well as night. Several of the swordfish buoy boats I have spoken to report great fishing at night. I have gotten calls about daytime sword fishing but hitting a button and catching these magnificent fish seems kind of anticlimactic. If you would still like to try daytime sword fishing I can put you in touch with a couple of captains that do daytime deep dropping for swordfish. If you would like to try and catch them the old fashion by hand cranking and earning your fish give me a call and we can give the nighttime sword fishing a shot.

The mahi-mahi continue to be very sporadic. You will hear of a couple being caught but the mahi fishing is leaving a lot to be desired. The fishing could improve shortly so stay tuned.

The bottom bite has been good for us. We have caught mutton snapper, red grouper and other assorted bottom fish. We are catching our fish on the wrecks and we had a couple that my customers were unable to stop so they are definitely there. Well that is it for now if you have any questions or comments please feel free to call.

Till Next Time

Best of Luck…
