Catch on the "GET EM" with Capt. Alan Sherman

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

The weather here in SOUTH FLORIDA has returned to normal and our fishing is coming back in a big way. The record cold spell did some serious damage to snook on the Gulf coast and up along the Atlantic side north of Broward County where water temperatures dropped to record lows. Small to medium sized tarpon took a hit in Everglades National Park and the peacock bass populations along with many of the exotics that live in the freshwater canals in some areas were totally wiped out. The good news is that this has happened a few times before in recent memory and all of these fish managed to come back in a large way. Snook populations did very well in the Miami area due to many deepwater areas that the fish fled to escape the cold. Tarpon moved offshore where they were safe. Bonefish took a big hit but the schools are large and have already returned to the shallow flats. Peacock bass survived along with many exotics in the canals of Miami.

If you are looking for a fun fishing trip then you might want to join me on a fishing trip to SOUTH BISCAYNE BAY where the fishing has been almost nonstop. Mutton snappers have been coming over the rail by the dozens and though they are mostly under sized some have made it past the 16 inch required size to be kept and the fish that were just under sized were all caught on light tackle that put up a great fight. Gag, black and red groupers are out of season but that hasn't stopped my clients from catching them on live and dead baits and Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp. Some of these fish made it over the minimum size limit but were immediately returned to the water. Sharks, grunts, porgies, bluefish, bluerunners, rays, flounders and Spanish mackerel joined in on the action. On nearby grass flats sea trout where available in good numbers eating live shrimp or pilchards under a Cajun Thunder float and Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp. Large TARPON have been actively feeding on the Oceanside beaches of Miami. They have been eagerly feeding on large live shrimp slow drifted on medium heavy tackle. Some of these SILVER Giants are over 100 pounds.

Freshwater fishing out in the Everglades has been outstanding with large numbers of largemouth bass being caught on soft plastic worms and floating Rapala plugs. Fishing in Flamingo continues to provide action from redfish, black drum, sheepshead, sea trout, jacks, ladyfish, lots of Spanish mackerel, bluefish, a few pompano and cobia.

Yesterday on a full day charter in South Biscayne Bay fishing live pilchards and shrimp, dead pilchards and Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp Joel D. Steve M. and his daughter Dana teamed up to catch over 10 mutton snappers to 17 inches, gag, red and black groupers to 21"s, sharks, rays, bluerunners and Spanish mackerel all on light tackle.
