Catch Em on the Get Em with Capt. Alan Sherman

Capt. Alan Sherman
September 16, 2012
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

It has been awhile since my last fishing update. The reason is quite simple. I had some surgery on my right index finger a little more than three weeks ago. Back in January while cleaning a whaoo caught in Bimini one of the fishes dorsal fins enter my index finger at the front of the nail and lodged itself under the skin just past the first nuckle. At first I thought the fin had been pulled free when I jerked my hand back after feeling the fin stick me. It swelled up immediately but I still wasn't sure it was in my finger. Days later it got infected and after a week of antibiotics it healed but was still stiff and swollen. Fast forward, I had an X Ray and sure enough it was still there so I decided to have it removed. I was put under and the fin was removed. It has now healed and I can get the finger wet. It feels fine but is still a little sensitive but after going out on a scouting trip in Biscayne Bay the other day I had no trouble throwing my cast net, casting and catching a bunch of sea trout, jacks to five pounds, ladyfish, snappers, gag grouper, houndfish that ate Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp bait, bluerunners and a 28 inch snook that ate a live pilchard.

The weather here in South Florida is still a bit unsettled but nothing you wouldn't expect in the month of September. In Biscayne Bay it still better to be on the water just after sunrise and fish until 11 AM although if it is cloudy you can push into the afternoon and still get action from all of the fish I mentioned earlier. There was plenty of glass minnows in the bay and some good schools of pilchards and Spanish sardines that were easy to catch for bait. At times there was surface action but as the day wore on the fish went deeper and all of the action was near the bottom.

Offshore of Miami when the weather is nice there is opportunities to target kingfish on the reef, bonitos, blackfin tuna and a few sailfish. Further offshore dolphins are still available but scattered.

Flamingo in Everglades National Park still is the place to be with action almost all day. Working the shallow flats and channels in Florida Bay continues to produce steady action from snook, redfish, sea trout, tarpon, jacks, ladyfish and snappers.

As the days go by we should start seeing signs of a fall migration of baitfish and predators. It has been reported that mullet schools are working their way south along the beaches but at this time they have not gotten to North Biscayne Bay. There was a report of a large school of bull redfish to 30 pounds that were in the area of the surf in Fort Lauderdale last week and red groupers had schooled up on the offshore reefs. Lobsters walked last week as well and if you were in the water with dive gear there was a good chance that you limited out in no time.
Give me a call and let's get out on the water.

Miami Fishing Forecast:

Fall is just around the corner and the fishing here in South Florida is just about to explode. I expect the fishing to be pretty consistent for the next three or four months with lots of SEA TROUT, JACK CREVALLES, LADYFISH, BARRACUDAS, SNOOK, TARPON in NORTH BISCAYNE BAY and OFFSHORE of MIAMI, KINGFISH, BLACKFIN TUNA, SAILFISH and DOLPHINS will be available on the calmer days and in FLAMINGO in EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK we always have a huge amount of wildlife like the WHITE PELICANS, ROSEATTE SPOONBILLS, SKIMMER BIRDS,GULLS, OSPREYS, EAGLES, TERNS, EGRETS, HERONS, ALLIGATORS, CROCODILES, BOTTLE NOSED DOLPHINS, MANATTEES, SHARKS and TURTLES and of course the wide variety of fish that migrate into FLORIDA BAY and the GULF waters during the cooler months of the year. SNOOK, TARPON, REDFISH, SEA TROUT, SHEEPSHEAD, TRIIPLETAIL, BLACK DRUM, SNAPPER, GOLIATH AND GAG GROUPER, POMOPANO, COBIA, MACKEREL, PERMITS, BLUEFISH and I'm sure I am leaving a few other fish species out will be available to all anglers at one time or another throughout the rest of Spring and into the summer. And don't forget about the freshwater fishing in the Glades. Any day now water levels will drop and the fish will move into the canals and LARGEMOUTH BASS AND LOTS OF PANFISH will be available.
