Cold Front in April Sparks Great Fishing!

Capt. Alan Sherman
April 8, 2009
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

A cold cold front in April! Go figure! This past week's cold front was a pleasant surprise after a few days of temperatures in the 90's. The unusual weather did spark some great fishing here in South Florida Inshore and Offshore.

On the inside in North Biscayne Bay action on sea trout continued with trout being caught to three pounds on Rapala Twitchin Raps, Hook Up lures tipped with Gulp and Trigger X shrimp and live shrimp and pilchards fished under a Cajun Thunder. Most of the trout action has been over the grass flats that have baitfish schools nearby. Some big tarpon have been shadowing the sea trout and on one charter we had a huge tarpon eat a trout that we were reeling in. Quite a few snook have been caught by my anglers during day trips in the bay. These fish have eaten mostly live baits fished under a Cajun thunder or just free lined on a 1/0 long shank Mustad hook. Large jack crevalles and ladyfish have also added to the action.

This past week a school of Spanish mackerel settled in just south of Haulover Inlet on the Oceanside. Weather conditions allowed us to fish the mackerel plus a few other spots where we were able to catch limit catches of mackerel to six pounds plus kingfish to 18 pounds and a few bonitos.

The action in Flamingo in Everglades National Park has been up and down with the weather. Windy conditions have made Florida Bay difficult to fish and then the cold front shut down things in Whitewater Bay. Last year once the cold cold fronts stopped we had very good fishing in Oyster and Whitewater Bay. Fishing the strong northeasterly winds that are associated with April and early May my clients fished the backsides of the islands and creeks and had great action while throwing Hook Up lures tipped with Gulp baits plus Rapala Twitchin Raps and I expect that fishing to start in just a few weeks and then carry through into early June. Double digit days on snook plus redfish, sea trout, tarpon, goliath groupers that were sightcasted and then the jacks and ladyfish kept my anglers busy all day long.

Freshwater fishing continues to get better as if it isn't all ready. Water levels keep dropping and almost all of the fish have moved into the
canals making the largemouth bass easy targets.

Recent Catches:

Gene H. and his grand daughter LJ fished Biscayne Bay and caught lots of sea trout to three pounds plus jacks, barracudas and a snook and LJ had a huge tarpon eat her trout only to jump and spit the trout back at us. The fish were caught during a 4 hour charter and the fish ate live shrimp under a Cajun Thunder and Hook Up lures tipped with Gulp shrimp.
