Cold Fronts and Hot South Florida Fishing Fishing

Capt. Alan Sherman
January 18, 2014
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Cooler Temperatures Some Red Hot Fishing!

This is the second part of my last fishing report and this report should bring me up to date with my fishing charters and pictures!

Cold fronts have been sliding past South Florida for the past week and a half. The cooler weather has dropped water temperatures by any degrees and our fishing in South Florida has responded to that weather change.

Baitfish schools have moved into the areas that I usually see them when the weather gets cool. Groupers, snappers, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, porgies sea trout, black drum, sheepshead, snook, redfish and many other species are back where they should be during the colder months of the year. On my last charter I fished in South Bay, the Finger Channels and on the Patch Reefs and had plenty of action.

North Bay has seen action from sea trout, jack crevalles, ladyfish, bluefish and a few Spanish mackerel.

Offshore fishing has been good for Spanish and small king mackerel, lots of bluerunners, mutton snappers, lesser amberjacks and a few bonitos.

South Bay, the Finger Channels and the Patch Reefs have been the hot spot recently. On my last charter in that area we had 7 gag groupers to 7.5 pounds, 2 black groupers to 6.5 pounds. Three porgies, 6 mutton snappers to 17 inches, 6 mangrove snappers to three pounds and one yellowtail that weighed 2 pounds. We also had over 20 bluerunners and 30 Spanish mackerel. The fish were caught on live pilchards hooked to a Mustad 1/ long shank hook and a 1/0 Mustad Ultra Point short shank hook. The mackerels were caught on the surface with a Cajun Thunder float and the bottom fish were caught on the bottom. All of this action happened using Medium light Key Largo fishing rods, 10 pound Stren line and Daiwa Lexa and Shimano Baitrunner spinning reels. On this tackle it is a real challenge to land a seven pound grouper. While we were fishing we had a 150 pound nurse shark swim into our chum line and somehow avoid our baits.

Flamingo fishing has picked up with big Spanish mackerel in numbers being caught in the open waters of Florida bay and the Gulf. In the channels of Florida Bay and in the creeks, canals and rivers redfish, black drum, sheepshead, sea trout, jacks, ladyfish and snook are being caught in nice numbers. These fish are eating live shrimp hooked to a Hookup Lure jig head.
