Consistent Tarpon Action

Capt. Dave Kostyo
January 9, 2013
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

The 2013 year is off to a good start, especially with consistent evening tarpon action. The offshore action still requires a lot of effort to put together a fair catch. Most days it's been green water and little to no current from Key Biscayne to the north.

The Stiffler Family (Loren, Collin, and Chase) got in some hot tarpon action before cheering on their Alabama Crimson Tide team the following night. During the first 1 hour and 30 minutes of the trip, we caught and released two tarpon and assisted a boat that was taking on water. We then caught a third tarpon and added 2 jack crevalles and a ladyfish.

The Bargas Family (Diego Sr, Diego Jr, Carlos, and Xavier) hung in to toward the end of the trip before the tarpon action got hot. It was well worth the wait as we caught and released 2 of the 3 tarpon that we hooked up along with a sennet and mangrove snapper.

Manuel Frau and his son Manuel, Jr. spent quality time together doing what they both enjoy, fishing. The E/ESE wind @ 14 – 19 knots made flying the kites a breeze. We had no current and green water off Key Biscayne. Fishing between 100 – 225 feet we caught 2 of the 4 dolphin that ate kite baits and 1 kingfish. The steaks and fillets from these fish made for several good fish fry meals.

John McKendry had his hands full with plenty of action during his 6 hour trip. We started on the beach and caught 2 ladyfish. Moved in to the Bay and added 6 jack crevalle. Then the tarpon action started. By the end of the trip we were 4 for 6 on tarpon with the last fishing coming with 5 minutes left in the trip.
