December Fishing Report

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
December 11, 2010
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Boy am I glad to be back! The past several weeks have been a blur. Between boat shows, sponsor commitments, travel and taking my boat to SeaVee for some maintenance and updates I sure am happy to be back to fishing. And the fishing has been good. I have had several trips the past two weeks and the fishing has been all over the place.
The sailfish bite has been very good. We have been catching them on the kite and flatlines. Even on our worst day of sailfishing we still had a couple shots although we failed to connect. That is part of the game. But since that one day we have been catching several on every trip. The bite will only continue to get better as the year continue.
Kingfish have also shown up in very good numbers. I did a trip yesterday that will illustrate just how good the kingfish bite has gotten. I fished with Chris Tardis yesterday on a full day charter. Our final fish count was 14 kingfish, 2 sails, amberjack, 4 false albacore, and what remained from a 30# cobia that got sharked. To be honest we could have ended up with well over 20 kingfish but after catching them on plug and fly Chris had had enough and wanted to go try for something else. The kingfish were in such frenzy that they would cut the floats off of kite lines as we reeled them in. Let's just say the kings are biting very well.
I have had some calls about tarpon fishing and yes the tarpon are here. You can almost expect to get a couple of shots at these fish on a four trip. We can fish for them on the beach or the bay so if you are prone to seasickness but love to fish this fishery may be the ticket due to the calm waters we are often able to fish in.
I won't even bore you with details about bottom fishing, false albacore, Spanish mackerel and all the other species I didn't even mention. The action can be so varied this time of year that we never know what will show up while we are fishing and that is the beauty of it. When the rod bends you never know if it is going to start tail walking like a sailfish of heading for the bottom like a grouper. A fellow captain that I know told me he caught 2 sailfish on his bottom rod on the same trip this week. So what are you waiting for the weather is beautiful, the fishing is starting to peak and you don't even need a passport. Give me a call and let's put together a trip of a lifetime. If you need a gift for that special fisherman in your life or you just want to learn a special fishing technique give me a call. Till next time.

Best of Luck
Captain Gil Gutierrez, Lucky Fishing Charters.
