Dolphin and Sharks Offshore

Capt. John Barker
February 27, 2015
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Blue Waters 2 started out for an all day trip and it was another beautiful February day in South Florida. The bait was active at the bent range marker and the anglers had fun capturing herring and other live baits.

On a hunch, Captain John started trolling offshore and found a nice rip with weeds and debris. Within a few minutes, he found a 10' small log covered in dolphin and the bite was on! One of the anglers had requested to dolphin fish since he had never caught one - well, it was his lucky day. In a flurry of action, eight nice-sized mahi were landed.

Leaving the log, the troll continued, but there were no further bites. The anglers saw acres of skip jack tunas busting everywhere but they would not bite.

Switching to sailfish mode, Captain John moved into shallower waters. Out went the live baits and down rod. It didn't take long before the bottom rod sang out and a mystery fish was on. The rod was relatively light tackle, so it was a surprise when a 5' hammerhead shark surfaced hooked on the spin tackle. Capt. John and the angler skillfully coached the fish to the boat where, after a photo, the shark was released.

With no current, the shark was the only bite. Capt. John went back to trolling the edge and found the log again. Four more dolphins bit and were landed. Then a small bull shark surfaced from the edge and chased the dolphin. He then ate a pilchard on light tackle - it was a great battle. The shark was eventually brought boat-side and released.
