Dolphin/Mahi Fishing Off Miami, Florida

Capt. Dave Kostyo
May 11, 2018
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Today was Brad's annual Birthday Fishing Trip. To help him celebrate, Cynthia, Allegra, Brianna, and Nick were along to help with the action.

We had a limited number of live baits and added a few more at the range marker. Running out in search of dolphin/mahi had us finding a nice weed line in 210'. We slow trolled a live herring and it didn't take long for the mahi to find us.

We worked the line for a good portion of the morning and then started chasing frigate birds. They put us on a few more fish.
The action slowed so we ran out a bit and found a pallet. Out went the live bait and as we slow trolled by it, the action started.
The mahi followed us away from the pallet and we added more fish to the box before running out of our limited bait.

By that time, we had 11 fish in the box and that was plenty for us and we headed back in to TNT Marine Center to clean fish, feed the tarpon, and send everyone home with mahi fillets for dinner.

Happy Birthday Brad Coren

Yesterday morning I fished a half day trip that Jennifer had arranged for her husband and his friend. They wanted to take home some mahi for dinner. We ran out and slow trolled live bait in among some scattered weed lines and got that accomplished fairly easy. With 3 mahi in the box they wanted to fish in on the reef to try and catch something else.

On our first drift, the downrigger bait got hit and we caught a large barracuda. On the last drift of the morning, we hooked a decent size shark on a light spinning outfit. After about 20 minutes it came up for some pictures and was released.
