11/13/08 On The Edge Aboard The Connie Marie!

Capt. Steven Tejera
November 13, 2008
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

I am fortunate to fish on a sportfish offshore once a week aboard the Connie Marie owned by my buddy Todd. Today Todd and I would be running his 36' Luhrs Open out to the edge with one thing in mind.Sailfish. We stopped to pick up some bait in the morning at marker 21 which only had some runners. We ran up to government cut and added a few threads to our goggle eyes and runners. We ran out of the cut in some sloppy seas. Todd ran the cockpit by himself and had 2 kites out with 2 lines on each kite. Soon we had dolphin in the spread and kingfish busting up the kite baits, Todd was clearing lines while fighting a fish and then leadering his fish and gaffing it, complete FIRE DRILL! All of our bite's were between 115-135ft. There has been schools of small flying fish with predator's under them scaring the life out of them and making them shower, only to have frigate birds hovering on top of them looking for a quick meal. After about an hour of fishing and having some decent action we lost controll on the starboard controll in the tower which forced us to head back in into protected water to attempt to fix the problem . We were able to fix it and run back safely. We decided to head back to the marina to be on the safe side. We didn't get the sailfish we were looking for today, but the Connie Marie will be back up and running soon, so stay tuned, theres another adventure in the near future!

Miami Fishing Forecast:

With the water temps going down soon, the sailfish bite will get better as the days go by. Also look for good bottom fishing in shallow for snapper and groupers between 25-85ft.
