Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
It's been a few weeks since my last fishing report, mostly due to the cold weather we have had and the Boat Show that kept me off the water for a few days. South Florida's uncanny weather has made things very difficult for the guiding business. Almost every week for over a month we have seen at least one or two very strong cold fronts hit South Florida. Looks like next week we may see a little warming trend and maybe a return of more normal weather conditions.
If you didn't make it to the Boat Show last week then you missed a downsized Boat Show with Vendors displaying a lot of what they had last year with a few new items to spice the show up. I spent two days in the Yamaha Outboard booth answering questions and steering new outboard buyers in the direction of Bob Hewes sales people. The booth was full of excitement due to the President of the American Branch of Yamaha Outboards stepping down and the introduction of the new incoming President. On top of that Yamaha introduced a few new Yamaha Four Stroke Outboards that are now 80 pounds or more lighter than last year's models. These engines are in the 70 to 350 horsepower ranges and will be more powerful at the hole shot, lighter and more fuel efficient, and if that wasn't enough Yamaha had the Hosts of the new TV show Offshore Adventures with Chris Fisher and Captain Brett McBride with video of them catching and tagging and then releasing a great white shark.
I had a few moments to walk around the show and saw many products that caught my eye but one product made me stop and talk to the people at the booth. If you have ever owned a boat and anchored that boat then I am sure that you have had an issue retrieving that anchor at one time or another or maybe had to cut the line so not to sink your boat. A company called Anchor Saver, LLC owned by President Peter Weinstein has solved that problem. Mr. Weinstein has come up with an interesting device that attaches to the lower shaft of the anchor as well as at the ring at the top. It works off the same principle as a trip. When too much pressure is applied at the anchor a piece breaks free allowing the anchor to be pulled from the bottom releasing the anchor from the mud or rock that it was caught on. I have tried it out and it does work!
Now to the fishing! In Biscayne Bay I recently fished some of the representatives of Yamaha in Biscayne Bay where we caught sea trout, mutton snappers, red and black groupers, sand perch, grunts, barracudas, lizardfish and missed a Spanish mackerel twice all on live pilchards fished on a 1/0 Mustad Ultra Point Hook, Rapala X Raps, Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp and live shrimp fished under a Cajun Thunder float.
In Flamingo we fished in Whitewater Bay on a cool windy day and caught sea trout till our arms hurt in two different spots plus lots of mangrove snappers, jacks, ladyfish, Spanish mackerel and gag groupers top 23 inches. We spooked a large school of slot sized redfish as well. The action was had on Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp and Rapala X Raps. On another trip to Flamingo on a very cold day we fished for two hours before losing a shrimp to a 4 pound black drum. Our next bite came in the same area but only ate half of the shrimp. We moved on a found a 10 pound free floating tripletail that totally ignored our well placed shrimp. We fished our way into the backcountry and finally started catching some fish. Snappers, ladyfish and jacks! Not the glamour fish we were looking for but at least some action. The day was beautiful but the fish were not cooperating.
Took a shot at some largemouth bass out on Route 27 and found 20 hungry bass to two pounds that were eager to eat soft plastic worms. We had plenty of strikes and saw more big alligator's than we cared to see in such a small area. Lots of birds as well!
Offshore anglers have had some luck on amberjacks, Spanish mackerel, large kingfish and a few sailfish and dolphins.
My son took a friend out to Chokoloskee and released nine snook up to 25 inches on sub surface plugs so there are a few snook still alive in the Glades!
Things should start warming up by next week so let's get out there and see what we can catch.

I expect the fishing to be pretty consistent for the next three or four months with lots of SEA TROUT, JACK CREVALLES, LADYFISH, SPANISH MACKEREL, BLUEFISH, GROUPER, BARRACUDAS, SNOOK, TARPON and some POMPANO in NORTH BISCAYNE BAY and OFFSHORE of MIAMI KINGFISH, MACKEREL, SAILFISH and DOLPHINS available on the calmer days and in SOUTH BISCAYNE BAY lots of action from a wide variety of fish like the SNAPPERS, GROUPERS, JACKS, BLUEFISH, MACKERELS, POMPANO, LADYFISH, PORGIES, GRUNTS, SNOOK and BLUERUNNERS keeping anglers busy catching and releasing fish most of the day. FLAMINGO in EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK will have a huge amount of wildlife like the WHITE PELICANS, ROSEATTE SPOONBILLS, SKIMMER BIRDS,GULLS, OSPREYS, EAGLES, TERNS, EGRETS, HERONS, ALLIGATORS, CROCODILES, BOTTLE NOSED DOLPHINS, MANATTEES, SHARKS and TURTLES and of course the wide variety of fish that migrate into FLORIDA BAY and the GULF waters during the cooler months of the year.
