Excellent May Fishing Action in South Florida

Capt. Alan Sherman
May 8, 2009
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

May is upon us and the last of the cold fronts are behind us as well. Fishing in South Florida is on the verge of exploding before the hot summer months take over and restrict us to fishing early or late in the day or at night. The one exception to this is in fishing Flamingo in Everglades National Park. In Flamingo because it is such a large area plenty of spots can be found where the fish will continue to feed throughout the day. Windy weather conditions have finally let up and the fishing has already reflected that.

Fishing North Biscayne Bay continues to produce sea trout, barracudas, jacks to 10 pounds, tarpon to over 125 pounds, possibilities at snook and the return of snappers to the grass flats. Shrimp are so small now that crabs are the choice baits for the tarpon at the inlets and by fishing the crabs you increase your chances at a shot at a permit as well. The rest of the bay fish will eat live pilchards and Hook Up lures tipped with Gulp and Trigger X scented baits. The nighttime snook fishing is starting to get better now that the wind is not a factor.

Offshore fishing has picked up as well and kingfish have been the dependable fish but lots of bonitos and dolphins are around plus a few blackfin tunas and the occasional sailfish.

South Biscayne Bay has a few snappers in the channels and a few snook and tarpon that can be targeted during the daylight hours plus plenty of barracudas.

Flamingo in Everglades National Park remains my top choice this time of year with action from snook for catch and release, redfish, trout, snapper, tarpon, goliath groupers targeted by sight fishing and blind casting to shorelines in Whitewater Bay and Oyster Bay. Last year I fished Flamingo more then any where else during May and June and had great action in both Florida Bay and in the Backcountry and on some trips we started in Florida Bay and fished all the way into Whitewater Bay and capitalized on some cobia, tripletail and permit off of the markers and crab trap buoys. We had plenty of goliath groupers to 20 pounds on Hook Up lures tipped with Gulp baits plus on one charter we had over 20 snook plus redfish and sawfish during a half day charter and then a few days later released 71 snook and 3 redfish and lost a 40 pound cobia, released goliath groupers, snappers, trout and ladyfish and jacks fishing the Gulf shorelines on into Whitewater Bay and the bugs never bothered us till July. On another charter in the backcountry and angler was reeling in a large trout only to have the trout eaten by a 25 pound snook. We hooked two other monsters that day only to have them break us off in the mangroves. Can't wait till my next Flamingo trip!

Recent Catches:

Joel and Steve fished North Biscayne Bay and caught jack crevalles to 9 pounds, sea trout to 4.5 pounds and Spanish mackerel while fishing free lined sardines and sardines fished under a Cajun Thunder.

Jerry C. and Jerry M. fished Flamingo in winds that exceeded 25 miles per hour and in the first 30 minutes got into a feeding frenzy of snook and landed a 29 inch fish on a live mullet before the fish shut off. After that it was all down hill. A few more missed snook bites a few sea trout, jacks, ladyfish and snappers a few missed goliath groupers and the day was over. The fish were caught on free lined finger mullet on a 1/0 Ultra Point Mustad Hook and Hook Up lures tipped with Gulp and Trigger X baits plus Rapala Twitchin Raps.

Mark and Shawn fished North Biscayne Bay and caught over 15 sea trout, mackerel and many barracudas on live pilchards and sardines fished under a Cajun Thunder.

Went down to the Florida Keys with my family for a short break and fished out of Marathon and Indian Key and caught yellowtail, mangrove and dog snappers plus many gag and black groupers, jack crevalles to 12 pounds, yellow jacks to 14 pounds, lost some huge barracudas and released a few sharks and missed a tarpon. Once again the winds played havoc with us but we still had a great time.

Ulga and her husband Dave wanted tarpon in North Biscayne Bay so I bought some crabs and we headed for Gov. Cut. As I was explaining what we were going to o Ulga's crab got hit and for the next tem minutes we thought we were hooked up to a big permit but then a big tarpon leaped into the air and the battle was on. For the next hour we dodged two freighters, one cruise ship, three supply boats and many charter and pleasure boats before bringing the 125 pound tarpon to boatside where the fish was leadered and released. The 4/0 Mustad Demon Circle Hook handled the tarpon just as it was designed.
