Fall Fishing is here in Sunny South Florida!

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

You can feel it in the air! Fall has arrived in South Florida! As I write I am disappointed that I am not on the water because finally with lower air and water temperatures schools of baitfish are migrating along our coast and into our bays. Tarpon, snook, jacks, ladyfish, sea trout, sharks, snappers and barracudas are feeding in and around these baitfish schools and now is the time to take advantage of what can be one of your best days on the water. For the next two months we can expect more bait to move into North and South Bay along with Spanish and juvenile king mackerel, bluefish, pompano, snappers and groupers. Add to this list all of the other fish I mentioned earlier and you can see there will plenty to fish for in our local South Florida waters. Most of this fishing will happen using live baits fished free lined or under a Cajun Thunder float but others will go for a Hookup lure tipped with a Gulp or Trigger X soft plastic or a Rapala hard plastic bait.
By the way if you are worried about the weather affecting the fishing here in South Florida during the Fall, Don't! Last year during the migration I fished a six hour charter where winds were blowing 20 to 30 miles per hour. I had three fishermen and stayed close to the protected shorelines where I filled two live wells full of pilchards and Spanish sardines and then fed them to over 100 Spanish mackerel, juvenile kingfish, bluefish, sea trout, snapper, grouper, jacks, ladyfish, big needlefish and barracudas. It was one fish after another.
South Bay should see a spike in its fishing with mutton, mangrove, yellowtail and lane snappers, gag, red and black groupers, porgies, jacks, bluerunners, sea trout, mackerel and pompano all being available out of Key Biscayne. Here we will fish with live shrimp, pilchards and pinfish using Mustad Ultra Point hooks on the bottom. The surface fish will be happy to attack the Rapala X Raps and some of the bottom fish can be tempted to eat a Hookup lure tipped with a Gulp or Trigger X shrimp.
Offshore fishing will have plenty of action from Spanish mackerel, bluefish, big jacks, tarpon, snook, king mackerel, dolphins, bonitos, blackfin tuna and sailfish. Many of these fish will be eating live baits free lined with Mustad Hooks other will attack a Rapala X Rap.
Flamingo in Everglades National Park will see more sheepshead, blackdrum, redfish and sea trout, pompano, cobia, Spanish mackerel, bluefish and many other species eating shrimp on Hookup lures and shrimp fished under a Cajun Thunder float.

Here are some recent pictures of a family outing in Key West. My family and I stayed in a two bedroom condo located in the Truman Annex. It is located just steps away from Duval St. and all of the fun places you want to visit in Key West. The condo is owned by one of my longtime clients Lucy and if you are interested in a great place to rent in Key West you can contact me and I will get you in touch with Lucy!
These pictures came from the area between Key West and the Marquesas Keys.

This picture is of a school of 12 to 14 inch mangrove snappers on the surface.

This floating pipe was on our line back to Key West had it been night time we would have hit it and sunk the boat.

This mangrove snapper that came out from under this pipe ate a Rapala SubWalk

Fall is here and the fishing in South Florida is about to explode. As more and more baitfish schools push into our waters more and more predators will be following and feeding on these baitfish giving my clients plenty of opportunities at some great catches. I look for snook, tarpon, mackerel, large jack crevalles, large ladyfish, snappers, groupers, sea trout, barracudas and more to feeding from sunrise to sunset in North Bay. South Bay will see plenty of action from snapper and groupers as well as mackerel, bluefish and pompano. Offshore we will see kingfish and Spanish mackerel, bonitos, sailfish, dolphins and blackfin tuna feeding right alongside each other. In Flamingo in Everglades National Park we will see the return of all of the migratory birds as they fill the park and make unbelievable sunrise pictures. Fishing for snook, redfish, sheepshead, blackdrum, snapper, sea trout, jacks ladyfish, sharks, tripletail, cobia and more will be as e exciting light tackle fishing as one could wish for.
