As we move into the month of February it's time to get caught up with the inshore and offshore fishing in South Florida.
Let's start with the best first!
Flamingo in Everglades National Park continues to be the hot spot for me recently. This past Saturday produced snook to 9.5 pounds, redfish to 24 inches, and bluefish to four pounds, plenty of jacks, ladyfish, a small flounder and over two dozen sea trout to four pounds. All of this action took place with live shrimp fished under a Cajun Thunder float and with Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp during very wind conditions. Add to that action all the wildlife you will see in a day on the water and around the Park and it makes for an exciting South Florida day on the water. This past week we had a bottlenose dolphin eat a live bait right off our hook next to the boat. At the boat ramp a wild American crocodile was sunning itself on the asphalt at the marina.

North Bay has been mostly up and down with baitfish schools moving in and out of the Bay. One day the bait is easy to find the next day very hard. The same goes to say with the bluefish and Spanish mackerel that have been working the few baitfish schools in the Bay. Every day that I have been able to locate the baitfish schools I have also been able to find bluefish, small jacks and a nice mackerel feeding on those baitfish. Besides the mackerel, small jacks and bluefish there have been a few snook to eight pounds caught and some bigger ones lost. Some big jack crevalles to 11 pounds have found some of my clients baits recently and provided some hot fishing. We even had a catch and release of a 33" cobia in the Bay last week. Plenty of sea trout although most have been small except for the over 20 inch fish that we have had are scattered throughout the Bay. Casting Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp is getting the most strikes from the sea trout. On many of our recent charters we have seen lots of bottlenose dolphins and manatees.

Offshore fishing continues to be hit and miss with only a few kingfish, sailfish, dolphins, bonito, blackfin tuna and bonitos biting.
In South Florida our weather this time of the year can change with the drop of a hat and so it is with our fishing. One location may be only fair today but tomorrow can be a whole different story.
I am often asked when is the best time to fish? Normally I answer with "When you Can". From now till December everyday no matter what the weather is is the best time to fish. Miss a day during the Fall Migration and you may have missed the best fishing of your life!
All of these fish were caught using Key Largo spinning rods, Daiwa Advantage spinning reels, Okuma spinning reels, Shimano spinning reels and Stren and P-Line lines.
What are you waiting for? Pick up the phone and lets go catch some snook!
