Fishing in full swing!

Capt. Orlando Muniz
February 23, 2009
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

During the last couple of months sailfish have definately been the stars of the show here in South Florida. We must be breaking some kind of record for the most fronts in a single winter season. Sailfish have been pushing through like clockwork after every passing front and anglers have not been disappointed. Mixed in with the sails there has been some small to medium mahi.

One of the species that has been missing from our winter mix has been the kingfish. Fortunately the kings are finally here and in full force. Over the last week or so they have made a strong showing and been responsible for many bent rods. Weather you like kingfish or not it is hard beat as a gamefish. The first sizzling run that a king makes will get anyone's heart pounding. Another nice thing about kings is that they can be caught using several different methods of which live bait is usually the most effective.

Wreck fishing has been pretty productive also both with the use of live bait or the very popular butterfly jigs. On our last trip we caught one of the largest almaco jacks that I've seen in quite a while(pictured below). The catch was made by a twelve year old that got as much as he could handle. Other fish that been hanging around these structures include mutton snapper, and a variety of grouper. Wreck fishing offers a nice alternative especially during those times of week currents and slow sail fishing.

Another alternative that is available right now is tarpon. Tarpon have moved into Miami's Government Cut and will remain there well into the month of May. Look for the action to continue heating up. The beauty about tarpon fishing is that you don't have to loose sleep or play hooky from the office. Most of the fishing is done during "Happy Hour".

Well, that pretty much sums it up. If you're tired about all of the "gloom and doom" on the evening news, it's time to go fishing. You don't need a psychologist or anti-depressants you just need to book a fishing trip.

Tight Lines,

Capt. Orlando Muniz
