Fishing has really Improved

Capt. Bouncer Smith

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing has really improved lately. We went from struggling to produce any action on day trips or night. We had a couple of cold fronts and things really turned around.

Now we are catching some sailfish every day. We have also had some kingfish, blackfin tuna, bonitos, and even some yellowfin tuna. One boat caught three yellowfin tuna in two trips. That is impressive off south Florida.

We caught our 35 pound yellowfin tuna in 220 feet of water using a herring on the kite. Captain Abie was thrilled to boat his first respectable yellowfin tuna in south Florida waters.

Wrecks have been producing amberjacks and grouper lately, but the season is closed on both, so catch and release is the game. Be sure to carry a Seaqualizer on board, so you can get these valuable fish back down in the depths where they can survive.

There have been some shrimp runs that have been described as epic in the last six weeks.

These shrimp runs may have something to do with our great tarpon action the last couple of trips. Massimo from Italy fought five and caught four tarpon, all over 100 tarpon in just over two hours on Thursday night. Needing more, Massimo caught 3 out of 5 tarpon from 60 to 100 pounds on Monday night.

March is just around the corner. That means more sailfish and tarpon are coming. Plus, we should see big mahi and bigger kingfish showing up any day.
